A lifestyle change

Your lifestyle and habits must change if you are considering weight loss surgery. Surgery is not a miracle pill that will drop the pounds for you. It is hard work and you still must be proactive to achieve the results you desire and take control over your health.

How do you lose weight?

Energy balance is the ration between the amount of energy you take in and the amount of energy your body consumes.

Excess energy is stored in the body as fat and is kept in reserve until it is burned as energy. When the energy burned during physical activity is greater than the energy in the food you eat, the fat reserves are used and excess fat is burned to meet the body’s needs. Reducing food intake or increasing physical activity leads to weight loss.

Nutrition = Energy

A healthful eating plan means choosing the right foods to eat and preparing foods in a healthy way. A good diet is important for your overall health. A healthy and varied diet can help you reach a desired body weight, enhance general wellbeing and reduce the risk of a number of diseases including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis.

A healthy diet is a diet based on breads, potatoes, and other cereals and is rich in fruits and vegetables. A healthy diet will include moderate amounts of milk and dairy products, meat, fish or meat/milk alternatives, and limited amounts of foods containing fat or sugar.

No single food can provide all the essential nutrients that the body needs. Therefore, it is important to consume a wide variety of foods to provide adequate intakes of vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre, which are important for health.

What you eat once you have the surgery will be vital to your success. Your stomach will not be able to handle large amounts of food, so every calorie will count to ensure you are getting the required nutrients.

Activity

Swimming, cycling, jogging, skiing, dancing, walking and dozens of other activities can help with weight management. Whether it is included in a structured exercise program or just part of your daily routine, all physical activity adds up to a healthier body.
